Yes guys. I am. I just found a cool way to update my blog life. As if I have. Yes, I will not be updating this blog ‘coz I totally convinced myself to just migrate to a different blog service. So you’re excited to upgrade from a development release of GIMP 2.7 to make use of it’s new features. But luck hasn’t been so good you, broke your stable GIMP install, stuck with the problem on the compilation, some pertinent libraries (gegl, libbabl, etc..) just magically gone away or cannot be used. You’re in the abyss of confusion on how to resurrect GIMP.

Now you decided to downgrade from 2.7 to 2.6 . Hmmm… was it easy? I hope so. But with GIMP running in Linux, particulary in Ubuntu, it’s been a struggle but it’s possible.

Let me share with you my discovery on how to downgrade from a failed GIMP 2.7 compilation/installation to GIMP 2.6 in Ubuntu Intrepid.

(STEP 1)

Open up a terminal ( ALT + F2 then type gnome-terminal )

(STEP 2)

sudo apt-get purge libgimp2.0 libbabl-0.0-0 gimp gimp-data gegl libgegl-0.0-0

- Let’s us delete GIMP and all related libraries like gegl & babl

(STEP 3)

sudo apt-get autoremove

- This will permanently remove the above libraries in your software repository

(STEP 4)

sudo apt-get autoclean

- Now that command cleans up your software repository

(STEP 5)

mkdir ~/temp && cd ~/temp

- We just created a folder named temp then get inside it. This is where we store the downloaded libraries which will be done in the next step

(STEP 6)

cat > gimp_libs.txt

- We placed the links into a filename called gimp_libs.txt. Just a note: press the enter key in every link. After the last link, just press enter then CTRL + C.

Another note: (Thanks Rore) The deb files you get isn’t an official repository. I just happen to have a backup of these libraries on my Ubuntu Intrepid apt cache directory then I uploaded to Dropbox.

(STEP 7)

wget -i gimp_libs.txt

- We used the wget command to download links supplied in the text file.

(STEP 8 )

sudo dpkg -i /usr/lib/*.deb

- Installed all the deb packages

(STEP 9)

sudo apt-get install gimp gimp-plugin-registry

- We just install GIMP 2.6. What a juicy downgraded . Now you can get back to production work.

Most probably, GIMP 2.8 will yet be released 2009, so it has been time to have a look at the current developer version. There are many cool new features, but the most important thing for us are the layer groups.

For me, I’m kind of comfortable of the interface of GIMP. Ever since I’ve used GIMP way back version 2.2, I was able to tolerate with its interface. So, as updates come along, I just made some adjustments towards my use with the application. It’s good to hear some great news about the future of GIMP’s User Interface. Good of us users and good for the future users too.

Hello everyone. Happy April 6, 2009. I’m glad to tell you guy that I have some experimentation cooking here. This post is a video tutorial, no  audio for now (crap me!), to which I call Let the GIMP do it. This is my very first attempt to make a video tutorial for the GIMP so please bear with me if you notice some noobness. Hehehe. Today we are going to learn how to boost productivity when dealing with basic image editing operations on multiple images such as simple sharpening, resizing, renaming, etc… So I’d like to introduce you with a very useful GIMP filter called David’s Batch Processor.

Question. How can I install that filter? Though you may install David’s Batch Processor plugin manually on any platform, I found it intuitive to just search it on Ubuntu’s repository. Yes guys, the scope of this video tutorial is intended for Ubuntu users only. You may easily add this filter along with some of the other useful filters by reading my previous post on Updating your GIMP plug-ins on Ubuntu 8.10. Made this with GIMP accompanied with GIMP Brushes: Hearts for the heart shapes and the use of URW Gothic L for the type texture effect.
