GIMP, on Google Summer of Code 2008

Good news to all of you hackers. GIMP will be participating on the Google Summer of Code 2008. Please allow me to relay, dear internet readers, some needed definitions.

GIMP, on Google Summer of Code 2008

WikipediaThe Google Summer of Code (GSOC) is an annual program, first held from May to August of 2005,[1] in which Google awards stipends to hundreds of students who successfully complete a requested free software / open-source coding project during the summer. The event draws its name from the 1967 Summer of Love (of the Sixties counterculture),[1] and the idea for the SOC came directly from Google’s founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page.[1]

Google Code FAQ – Google Summer of CodeTM has several goals:

  • Get more open source code created and released for the benefit of all
  • Inspire young developers to begin participating in open source development
  • Help open source projects identify and bring in new developers and committers
  • Provide students in Computer Science and related fields the opportunity to do work related to their academic pursuits during the summer (think “flip bits, not burgers”)
  • Give students more exposure to real-world software development scenarios (e.g., distributed development, software licensing questions, mailing-list etiquette)

Gimpusers.comIn 2007 GIMP didn’t make it into the program. Google has now published the list of supported projects in the Summer of Code (GSoC) program 2008 – and this year GIMP is in!

Here is your chance to join GIMP development: GIMP has been accepted as a mentoring organization for Google Summer of Code 2008. Check the proposals, come up with your own ideas, talk to the developers on the mailing list or IRC, and sign up for work!

You might be wondering why is it essential for the GIMP participating on GSOC 2008? On the one hand, there will be lots of possibilities for new emerging ideas, suggestions, proposals to be added for the GIMP, if Google permits. On the other hand, collaboration with Google & the rest of the Community with the GIMP developers/mentors would give GIMP the chance to advocate and present the technology behind GIMP itself.

Thanks much dannybuntu. That was a very interesting improvement for the GIMP. I have so much excitement on the upcoming stable release, 2.6. You know, the GEGL full integration and some other stuffs. At the moment, I’ll just stick on the updates provided by Ubuntu.

BTW, would you mind if I add you on my blog roll? Thanks for adding this simple blog on you “Filipino Linux Bloggers”

    Thanks in advance.

I’m hoping to learn GIMP, as I’d like to find FOSS to add to my skills. It is very difficult to be creating website graphics especially if you can’t afford tools like Photoshop or Fireworks, and with FOSS such as GIMP, I can gain an advantage in the graphics area.

    Cheers to GIMP!

I do agree with you. In F/OSS, everyone’s invited. Just feel free to get your hands dirty. hehehe. :D
